After two South Coast Conference colleges advanced to last year's 3C2A State Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament, the SCC is hoping it can continue that success in 2025.
Currently state #10-ranked Pasadena City College, a program that hasn't reached a state tourney in 30 years, is out to a strong start at 9-3 in pre-conference play while #12 Mt. San Antonio (8-3) is expected to again be the top honchos in the SCC North Division. The two schools shared last year's North title, both at 7-1.
PCC's biggest win was a 5-set triumph over #11 Santa Monica and the Lancers are led by a State Player of the Week from Sept. 8 selections in 6-foot-1 frosh middle blocker Delaney Blied, who is the conference leader in kill percentage at .436. Mt. SAC also earned a State Player of the Week a few weeks ago in sophomore libero Mayah Tiscareno.
Mt. San Antonio has key victories over #15 Moorpark and #18 MiraCosta.
Long Beach City made the tourney last year and despite a rough beginning against mostly a challenging schedule, it has won four of its last six matches to raise its record to 4-8. The Vikings have losses v. state #1 Feather River, #2 Fresno City, #3 San Joaquin Delta, #4 San Diego Mesa (five sets), and #6 Orange Coast (five sets), Moorpark and MiraCosta.
LBCC also was a co-champion with Cerritos, a '24 state tourney participant as well, in the SCC South Division last year. But Long Beach may have the inside track on this year's crown as the Falcons have lost several key players to graduation and its head coach Kari Hemmerling (now at Irvine Valley). Cerritos has slumped to 4-6 after a 3-0 begining to the season.
Long Beach returns SCC South Freshman of the Year in outside hitter Tyreana Allen. Cerritos is paced by points leader and current conference kills average leader (3.23) in first-year opposite Jordin Lewis.
El Camino is 5-6 and hopes to rebound enough to earn a playoff spot this season and possibly challenge for the SCC South title. All of the Warriors' losses have come against Top 25 ranked teams. Freshman MB Amiekal Looney is the team's points leader thus far.
New head coaches in the South are Cerritos' Ashleigh Atsaros and LA Harbor's Rachel Pittock.
In the South, LA Harbor has a solid defender in sophomore Lauren Villaneda while Compton is led early on by freshman OH Samorah Fa'amasino.
Back in the North, a featured player for Rio Hondo is right side hitter Aliana Isabelle Paxon, East Los Angeles returns All-SCC Second Team MB Samantha Arrizon, and LA City is led by OH Abigail Valencia Benitez.
All the SCC teams are in the crossover portion of the schedule as the 8-match division races begin on October 1.
Mt. SAC is #12 ranked in the state
