The Crossover Challenge Tournament, hosted by El Camino College, features a 16-team field that includes 12 of the Southern California Region's Top 15 ranked women's basketball teams by the CCCWBCA. Eight teams from the South Coast Conference are part of the event that begins Friday, Jan. 4 and continues with various games on Saturday, Jan. 5, Wednesday, Jan. 9, Friday, Jan. 11 and concludes Saturday, Jan. 12.
The ambitious tourney, to be played all over the region, is split up into two, 8-team brackets with the White Bracket including #2 Los Angeles Trade Tech (SCC North), #4 Pasadena City (SCC North), #5 Palomar, #9 Ventura, #10 Glendale, #13 West Los Angeles, and unranked Cerritos (SCC South) and Grossmont.
The Blue Bracket consists of #3 East Los Angeles (SCC North), #6 Mt. San Antonio (SCC North), #7 and defending state champion Mt. San Jacinto, #8 El Camino (SCC South), #12 Rio Hondo (SCC North), #14 College of the Canyons, along with unranked Long Beach City (SCC South) and LA Valley. Each bracket will produce a separate champion.
From the region's Top 10 teams, only No. 1-rated Moorpark, a team that saw its 16-game win streak snapped by SCC power East Los Angeles last month, is not participating in the tourney.
Of the first-round matchups, a Jan. 5 encounter between Mt. SAC and host Mt. San Jacinto figures to be the most hotly-contested game in the Blue Bracket while the Jan. 4 game between much-improved Glendale at always tough Pasadena could very well be the game to watch to open White Bracket play. As it stands, state No. 5-ranked LA Trade Tech is the pre-tourney favorite in the White Bracket while No. 6 East LA is the Blue Bracket favorite according to the coaches poll. Tourney participants Trade Tech and Palomar along with MSJC advanced to last year's state final 8 tournament.
