Complete SCC Track and Field Championship Results
Mt. San Antonio College won more than half of the first-place medals performed with 11 champions in easily collecting its fifth consecutive and 33rd overall team title at the South Coast Conference Prelims/Championships held April 21 and 25 at El Camino College.
The Mounties scored 389 points, more than doubling that of second-place Cerritos at 180. Long Beach City was third with 68.
Taiyo Ishiguro led the charge with wins in the javelin (second year in a row, 187 feet flat) and the decathlon in scoring 6,668 points. Myles Massie secured wins in the long jump (24-3.75) and triple jump as his 52-4 was not that far off from the meet record held by the Mounties' Don Parish of 53-1 set back in 1987.
Mt. SAC swept the relays, winning the 4x100 meters (Leniel Suarez, Marques Guzman, Dave Barker, and Yannik Berg) in 41.18, .32 of a second faster than Cerritos, and capturing the 4x400 event in 3:14.76 (Guzman, Dylan Ochoa, Dillon Thomasson, and Berg).
Some of the high-point events for the Mounties were the 3,000 steeplechase as Connor Sybrandy led the top four places of Mt. SAC racers for the title at 9:42.06 and Caleb Garcia winning the pole vault (15-1) as the top three places were all Mounties.
Single event champs were Ochoa in the 400 (48.13), Fudail Burns in the 400 hurdles (55.62), Arik Singh in the high jump (6-6.75), Andres Lambarena in the shot put (49-2.25).
East Los Angeles' William Liu was a double champion in the sprints as he beat Mt. SAC's Guzman by a hair, 10.62 to 10.63 in the 100 dash and bolted to a 21.55 for the 200 victory. Also a double champion was Cerritos distance runner Joshua Morales, who scored the 5,000 (15:02.77) and 10,000 titles as his 32:06.63 was almost a half a minute faster than the next closest racer.
El Camino grabbed two wins behind Gunner Perez in the 110 hurdles (15.21) and Laighton Scott in the discus (162-1). Long Beach's only triumph was in the 400 hurdles by Fudail Burns (55.62). LA Harbor's Sebastian Skarr raced to the 800 title at 1:53.61.
Cerritos won four events overall including Juan Flores in the 1,500 (3:55.30) and Damian Salas in the hammer throw (176-0).
Pasadena City was left out of the winner's lane, but received strong second place finishes by Morgan Strauss in the 400 and Quishawn Stanford in the 400 hurdles. Ryan Sheffield scored second for Long Beach in the long jump.
Many qualifiers from the SCC will next take part in the Southern California Prelims/Championships May 2 and 9 at Bakersfield College. The season concludes at the annual 3C2A State Championships May 15-16 held this year at Mt. SAC.
